Mystery revealed

John Flaxman (1755-1826) The Adoration of the Magi Graphite with gray wash and watercolor on medium, slightly textured, cream wove paper Yale Center for British Art

The mystery was made known to me by revelation. Ephesians 3:3

As we pay attention to every person we encounter, the mystery of God within each of us is revealed. With deliberate awareness, we learn to search all people for what we share in common: God’s love and goodness.

Today I will follow the light of my heart and treat all people with reverence. I will ask God to reveal His holy presence in each person I meet.

Watch carefully how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil.
Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. Ephesians 5:15-17

Jesus teaches that it is God’s will that I love my neighbor as myself, forgive those who hurt me, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger. If I ignore Jesus and refuse to feed on his word and example, I am indeed foolish.

Today I will ask the Holy Spirit to fill me the wisdom and courage to embody God’s will of love and humble service.

And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. Ephesians 4:32

Jesus, the bread of life, nourishes me with his example of loving service so that I become more like him in kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

Today I will give thanks to the One who feeds me on the Way of peace, reconciliation, and love.

Feed one another

JESUS MAFA. Jesus multiplies the loaves and fish, from Art in the Christian Tradition, a project of the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, Nashville, TN.

[L]ive in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3

Let us not waste any opportunity to treat all people with reverence. Let us feed each other with kindness and gentleness. Let us share peaceful words and be unified in God’s Spirit of love and mercy.

Today I will feed myself, my family, friends, and everyone I encounter with patience and kindness.

Christ Jesus is our peace

When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:34

Let us follow the teaching of the Lord, our shepherd, and take care of each other in peace and love. Let us follow his teaching and forgive those who hurt us. Let us follow his teaching and love one another, even our enemies.

Today I will intentionally choose peace over conflict, reconciliation over revenge, and love over indifference.

The gift of grace

Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) Jesus and Nicodemus, 1899

For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;
it is not from works, so no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

There are no rewards, only gifts. Everything we receive from God is a gift of grace.

Today I will intentionally turn toward the light of God’s rich love and mercy for guidance in the choices I make, the words I speak, and the works I do.

Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another.
Ephesians 4:32

May I be aware that you are carrying unknown burdens. May I choose kind attitudes, words, and behaviors in your presence. May I feed you with God’s love and faithfulness.

Live in gentleness

[Live]…with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love. Ephesians 4:-2

Treat yourself and others with gentleness. Choose gentle words. Make your touch gentle. Look into hearts. See the fragility and vulnerability there. Know that gentleness heals.

Love is the will of God. I learn to embody the will of God by practicing respect, forgiveness, kindness, compassion, generosity, patience, and acceptance with all people—even my “enemies.”

Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. Ephesians 5:17

Today I will be mindful of serving the little bit of love and compassion I have to others.

One person’s offering can go a long way—for it is the Lord who multiplies it.

All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. Ephesians 4:31-32
